    Utilities send European markets higher

    In Europe, equities markets were higher on Wednesday.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was 0.65 percent higher to 1,539.28. Frankfurt’s Dax was up 0.45 percent to 7,804.15, while the CAC-40 added 0.87 percent to 5,690.77 and the IBEX jumped 1.59 percent to 14,540.5 in Madrid.

    Utilities saw gains.

    In Frankkfurt, RWE (FWB: RWE) and Eon (FWB: EOA; LSE: EON; NSYE: EON) both had their target share prices increased by JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM; TYO: 8634).

    Eon was 1.26 percent higher to €129.44, while RWE was up 1.72 percent to €88.26.

    EDF (Euronext: EEN) added 1.77 percent to €74.24 and Suez (Euronext: SZE; NYSE: SZE) gained 2.43 percent to €40.88, while Gaz de France (Euronext: GAZ) jumped 2.98 percent to €35.99.

    IT group Cap Gemini (Euronext: CAP) had the best day on the CAC-40 with a gain of 5.93 percent to €42.70, while stock exchange operator Deutsche Boerse (FWB: DB1) turned in the best performance on the Dax as it added 3.44 percent to €96.86.

    Banks were mixed, with BNP Paribas (Euronext: BNP; TYO: 8665) down 0.05 percent to €74.26 but Dexia (Euronext: DEXB) 1.68 percent higher to €21.21.

    The automobile manufacturing sector was also mixed.

    Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC: PEUGY) dropped 0.33 percent to €57.11 while BMW (FWB: BMW) was up 3.37 percent to €38.16.

    The chemicals sector declined in Frankfurt.

    BASF (FWB: BFA; NYSE: BF) was 1.05 percent lower to €96.64, while Altana (FWB: ALT; NYSE: AAA) had the worst day on the Dax as it dropped 1.21 percent to €17.11.

    Hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC) declined the most on the CAC-40 as it fell 0.68 percent to €60.19.

    Accor adds almost 6 percent on session

    European markets were higher Wednesday after Tuesday’s losses.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was up 0.47 percent to 1,497.28.

    In Frankfurt, the Dax gained 0.12 percent to 7,439.18.

    Madrid’s IBEX added 0.42 percent to 14,183.6, while the CAC-40 was up 0.84 percent to 5,520.02 in Paris.

    Hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC) was the best performer on the CAC-40, adding 5.86 percent to €62.91 on first half profits that were more than double and on the announcement of a stock buyback worth €500 million.

    Airline Lufthansa had the best day on the Dax, gaining 3.29 percent to €21.28. Retailers saw gains.

    German retailer Metro (FWB: MEO) was up 2.9 percent to €61.36, while Carrefour (Euronext: CA) added 3.39 percent to €52.14. The car and truck manufacturing sector was mixed.

    In Paris, Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC; PEUGY) dropped 0.34 percent to €60.70 and Renault (Euronext: RNO) was the worst performer on the CAC-40 as it fell 2.34 percent to €97 after its CEO said that “unprecedented” growth would be needed if it is to meet its goals for 2009.

    In Germany, however, Daimler Chrysler (FWB: DCX; NYSE: DCX; TYO: 7663) was up 0.9 percent to €63.26 after it raised its profits forecast and announced a stock buyback that could be worth as much as €7.5 billion.

    Truck maker Man (FWB: EDF1) was 1.16 percent higher to €101.45.

    Utilities declined on the session, with EDF (Euronext: EEN) 0.05 percent lower to €73.90 and Eon (FWB: EOA; LSE: EON; NYSE: EON) down 0.54 percent to €118.60.

    UBS warning sends European banks lower

    European markets saw losses on Tuesday, led by declines in banks that are still beset by problems in the credit market.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was 1.28 percent lower to 1,493.85.

    In Frankfurt the Dax dropped 0.66 percent to 7,425.07, while the WIBEX was down 1.21 percent to 14,553.1 in Madrid and the Paris CAC-40 fell 1.63 percent to 5,478.66.

    The banking sector was led lower as UBS (SWX: UBSN; NYSE: UBS;j TYO: 8657) warned that earnings by investment banks would be affected by recent market volatility in the second half.

    While the Swiss bank reported better than anticipated results in the second quarter, it said that if current conditions persist its second half could be weak.

    After its warning, UBS dropped 3.9 percent to SFr63.50.

    Banks were the three biggest losers of the session on the CAC-40.

    Credit Agricole (Euronext: ACA) fell 2.77 percent to €27.03, while BNP Paribas (Euronext: BNP; TYO: 8665) was 3.48 percent lower to €78.18 and Societe Generale (Euronext: GLE) dropped 4.59 percent to €119.00.

    Spanish bank Banco Santander (IBEX-35: SAN; LSE: BNC; NYSE: STD) was 1.7 percent lower to €13.52.

    In Frankfurt, meanwhile, Commerzbank (FWB: CBK) was down 1.47 percent to €29.37, while Deutsche Bank (FWB: DBK; NSYE: DB) fell 2.9 percent to €94.33.

    The biggest loser on the Dax, however, was Fresenius Medical Care (FWB: FREG), which was down 2.99 percent to €35.12.

    Steelmaker ThyssenKrupp (FWB: TK; LSE: THK) was the best performer on the Dax as it added 2.22 percent to €40.34 on an upgrade from “neutral” to “outperform” from Credit Suisse (SWX: CSGN; NYSE: CS), which also raised the steel group’s target share price from €42 to €47.

    There were only four gainers on the day on the CAC-40, with hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC) leading the way with a gain of 0.69 percent to €59.44.

    The semiconductors sector was higher, with STMicroelectronics (Euronext: STM; NYSE: STM) 0.16 percent higher to €12.60 and Infineon (FWB: IFX; NYSE: IFX) up 0.45 percent to €11.17.

    Industrial gases groups mixed

    European markets also headed lower again Wednesday after Tuesday’s gains.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 dropped 1.54 percent to 1,526.07.

    In Frankfurt the Dax was 1.45 percent lower to 7,473.93, while the IBEX fell 1.46 percent to 14, 586.1 in Madrid and the Paris CAC-40 was down 1.68 percent to 5,654.3.

    Volkswagen (FWB: VOW; OTC: VLKAY) had the best day on the Dax, where it added 1.12 percent to €134.

    On the other hand, BMW (FWB: BMW) dropped 5.06 percent to €35.34.

    Other gainers in Frankfurt included industrial gases group Linde (FWB: LIN) was up 0.97 percent to €87.60, while in Paris Air Liquide (Euronext: AI) dropped 2.61 percent to €93.21.

    Lufthansa (FWB: LHA) added 0.73 percent to €20.83 and retailer Metro (FWB: MEO) was 0.65 percent higher to €57.56.

    There were only two gainers on the CAC-40, both related to the steel sector.

    Steel products manufacturer Vallourec (Euronext: VK) added 1.57 percent to €196.12, while Mittal Steel had the best day in Paris as it gained 2.21 percent to €46.74.

    The utilities sector was lower, with Gaz de France (Euronext: GAZ) 2.47 percent lower to €33.50 and Suez (Euronext: SZE; NYSE: SZE) down 2.57 percent to €37.97.

    Hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC) fell 2.73 percent to €61.57, while in the pharmaceuticals sector Sanofi (Euronext: SAN; NYSE: SNY) was down 3.35 percent to €59.44.

    Conglomerate Bouygues (Euronext: EN), with interests in media, construction and telecommunications, was the worst performer on the CAC-40, dropping 4.13 percent to €56.70.

    Chems, utilities rise among many declines

    European equities markets saw their biggest losses in five years On Thursday.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 dropped 2.62 percent to 1,530.56.

    Among continental markets, the Dax was 2.39 percent lower to 7,508.96, while the IBEX was down 2.66 percent to 14,540.4 in Madrid and the Paris CAC-40 fell 2.78 percent to 5,675.05.

    There were no winners reported on the CAC-40, while the best performance on the Dax came from electricity and natural gas utility RWE (FWB: RWE) only amounted to a gain of 1.49 percent to €79.52.

    Elsewhere on the Dax, rival utility Eon (FWB: EOA; LSE: EON; NYSE: EON) was 0.38 percent higher to €117.26.

    The chemicals sector was also a bit higher in Frankfurt as BASF (FWB: BFA; NYSE: BF) added 0.26 percent to €95.07 and Altana (FWB: ALT; NYSE: AAA) gained 0.7 percent to €17.35.

    Car and truck makers were lower on the session.

    BMW (FWB: BMW) was 2.62 percent lower to €36.73 and truck manufacturer Man (FWB: EDF1) fell 2.74 percent to €103.43, while Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC: PEUGY) was down 4.28 percent to €59.06 and Renault (Eurofirst: RNO) dropped 4.83 percent to €102.88.

    The worst performer on the CAC-40 was tire maker Michelin (Euronext: ML), which fell 6.07 percent to €93.56.

    Other decliners included hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC), which was 4.75 percent lower to €62.95.

    Construction group Vinci (Euronext: DG) was down 4.93 percent to €52.60, while drinks maker Pernod-Ricard (Euronext: RI) dropped 5.18 percent to €152.59.

    Automakers biggest losers in Europe

    European equities were lower on Wednesday, in some cases significantly lower on the session.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 dropped 1.09 percent to 1,605.06.

    In Madrid, the IBEX fell 0.63 percent to 15,058.6, while the Paris CAC-40 was 1.69 percent lower to 5,995.97 and the Dax dropped 1.8 percent to 7,893.61 in Frankfurt.

    Carmakers were the worst performers both on the Dax and in Paris.

    In Frankfurt, DaimlerChrysler (FWB: DCX; NYSE: DCX; TYO: 7663) dropped 3.09 percent to €66.51 for the worst performance on the Dax, with BMW (FWB: BMW) right behind it for the second worst of the day as it fell 2.54 percent to €39.07.

    Meanwhile in Paris, Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC: PEUGY) was the biggest loser, dropping 3.05 percent to €61.69.

    Renault (Euronext: RNO) was also lower, falling 2.8 percent to €112.50.

    The carmakers were hurt by the strength of the euro, which makes exports more expensive.

    Also seeing declines were hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC), which was 2.95 percent lower to €68.10 after it reported low growth in the US.

    Industrial gases group Linde (FWB: LIN) was down 2.48 percent to €87.28, while pharmaceuticals giant Bayer (FWB: BAY; NYSE: BAY; TYO: 4863) dropped 2.18 percent to €55.77.

    On the other hand, Schering (FWB: SCH) was 0.08 percent higher to €104.27 as the only gainer on the Dax for the day.

    There were only two gainers on the day in Paris.

    Property group Unibail (Euronext: UL) was up 0.41 percent to €187.25, while drinks group Pernod-Ricard (Euronext: RI) had the best performance of the day on the 40, adding 0.59 percent to €164.59.

    Engineering sector higher in Europe

    Equities markets saw significant gains on Thursday after two days of wide declines.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 added 1.19 percent to 1,620.18. The IBEX gained 1.19 percent to 14,941.8 in Madrid, while the Paris CAC-40 was 1.7 percent higher to 6,103.05 and the Dax was up 1.96 percent to 8,053.43.

    The engineering sector did very well on the day, with the best performance on both the Dax and in Paris.

    In Frankfurt, Siemens (FWB: SIE; NYSE: SI) gained 3.87 percent to €110.82, while in Paris engineering and power generation group Alstom (Euronext: ALO) was 8.45 percent higher to €135.60.

    Builders and those that furnish materials to them were higher in Paris.

    Construction group Vinci (Euronext: EG) added 4 percent to €57.70, while cement and construction materials provider Lafarge (Euronext: LG) gained 2.1 percent to €134.54.

    Other gainers included stock exchange operator Deutsche Boerse (FWB: DB1), which was 3.84 percent higher to ¥89.75 and chipmaker Infineon (FWB: IFX; NYSE: IFX) with a gain of 3.63 percent to €13.41.

    In the oil sector, Total (Euronext: FP; NYSE: TOT) added 3.02 percent to €62.38.

    The biggest loser on the CAC-40 was hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC), which dropped 1.48 percent to ¥71.88.

    On the Dax, the only decliner of the session was financial services group Marschollek (FWB: MLPG), which fell 0.2 percent to €15.22.

    Bayer gains 1.43 percent

    Equities markets declined for a second straight day in Europe on Wednesday, but losses were not as steep as they were on Tuesday.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was 0.28 percent lower to 1,602.41. In Paris the CAC-40 fell 0.3 percent to 6,001.09, while the IBEX was down 0.39 percent to 14,766.2 in Madrid.

    Meanwhile, the Dax was 0.83 percent lower to 7,898.54 in Frankfurt.

    There was, in fact, only one gainer on the session on the Dax as pharmaceuticals and chemicals group Bayer (FWB: BAY; NYSE: BAY; TYO: 4863) added 1.43 percent to €55.39.

    The best day in Paris came for hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC), which gained 5.27 percent to €72.96 on rumors that it could be a bids target.

    In the retail sector, Carrefour (Euronext: CA) was 0.9 percent higher to €53.89 after it reported strong sales.

    Carmakers were lower on the day, hurt by the strength of the euro.

    BMW (FWB: BMW) had the biggest loss of the day on the Dax as it dropped 1.61 percent to €39.73, while DaimlerChyrsler (FWB: DCX; NYSE: DCX; TYO: 7663) fell 1.55 percent to €67.45.

    Truck maker Man (FWB: EDF1) was 1.44 percent lower to €110.28.

    Banks were lower in Paris, with BNP Paribas (Euronext: BNP; TYO: 8665) down 0.91 percent to €85.80.

    Elsewhere in the sector, Credit Agricole (Euronext: ACA) dropped 0.92 percent to €29.11 and Societe Generale (Euronext: GLE) was 0.95 percent lower to €133.73.

    The worst performer on the day in Paris was power generator Alstom (Euronext: ALO), which fell 1.87 percent to €125.03.

    Eurofirst declines

    Mergers and acquisitions again took center stage as European equities markets dropped on Wednesday, with the FTSE Eurofirst 300 down to its lowest close in three weeks, dropping 0.8 percent to 1,333.17.

    Utilities were still in the midst of a round of bids and counter bids. The board of Enel met to consider how to react to a planned merger between Suez and Gaz de France, including mulling a possible bid for Suez. Suez gained 3.2 percent on the day to €34.07, while Enel lost 0.7 percent to €6.853 and Gaz de France dropped 0.4 percent to €29.29.

    Elsewhere, Dutch media group VNU agreed to be purchased by a group of private equity firms, although one asset management company holding around 2 percent of VNU’s shares said it would reject the bid and asked VNU’s board to let shareholders vote on a new sale process. Other shareholders were unlikely to support the request. VNU closed slightly lower at €28.75.

    In the pharmaceuticals sector, up 1.8 percent as a whole, Sanofi-Aventis and Novartis were both higher after Morgan Stanley called stocks in the sector “very cheap”. Sanofi was up 2.5 percent to €72.65, while Novartis advanced by 1.1 percent to €71.35.

    Hotel group Accor, meanwhile, dropped 7.4 percent to €47.47 after investors were disappointed by a reduced dividend and no clear guidance to where the company is headed.

    Economic news sends Eurofirst lower

    Mixed economic data out of the United States and a hike in interest rates in the eurozone sent the FTSE Eurofirst 300 down by 0.1 percent on Friday and 0.2 percent lower on the week to close at 1,342.43 on Friday. The decline came after the index reached a four and a half year high on Monday, as the negative news overcame news of mergers and acquisitions activity and some positive corporate earnings reports.

    Among the gainers during the week were Deutsche Telekom, which had a better than expected fourth-quarter report that sent shares up 1.9 percent during the week to €13.64. Oil field services company Saipem also had a good earnings report as well as a positive outlook statement for 2006, sending its shares up 15 percent on the week to €18.59.

    Accor gained on the week on the news that it is thinking about selling its portion of the travel agency Carlson Wagonlit in order to concentrate on its hotel business, with shares up 3.5 percent to €51.45. Property company Metrovacesa was up 20.1 percent to €73 after its rival, Sacresa, made a bid for the company.

    Belgian financial services provider Fortis dropped 4.4 percent during the week to €29.12 after it had to release its full-year headline results after a briefcase holding a draft of its report was stolen.

    Utility Suez lost 7.9 percent on the week to €31.20 after analysts issued a negative assessment of the terms of its merger with Gaz de France, which lost 4.1 percent during the week to €70.25. Elsewhere in the utilities sector, Germany’s Eon was down 4.8 percent on the week to €90.23 after legislation made it less likely that its bid for Endsea of Spain would succeed.
