    Fresenius Medical Care higher on profits report

    Equities markets saw gains in Europe on Thursday.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 added 0.64 percent to 1,536.03.

    In Paris the CAC-40 was 0.49 percent higher to 5,682.07, while the IBEX gained 0.6 percent to 14,682.7 in Madrid and the Dax was up 0.81 percent to 7,534.13 in Frankfurt.

    Banks saw gains in Paris, with Societe Generale (Euronext: GLE) adding 4.3 percent to €129.89 for the best performance of the day on the CAC-40 after it reported that net profits were up by almost 33 percent in the quarter ending in June.

    BNP Paribas, meanwhile, was 1.43 percent higher to €81.80 on target share price updates from UBS (NYSE: UBS; SWX: UBSN; TYO: 8657) and Credit Suisse (NYSE: CS; SWX: CSGN), from €97 to €104 and from €100 to €103 respectively.

    In Frankfurt, the best performer on the session came from Fresenius Medical Care (FWB: FREG), which gained 3.87 percent to €35.87 after it reported that second quarter profits rose by 38 percent, topping analyst estimates.

    Fresenius also increased its full-year sales forecast.

    In the telecommunications sector, France Telecom (Eurofirst: FTE; NYSE: FTE) was also aided by profits news, adding 3 percent to €20.25 after it reported that lower taxes and more broadband internet subscribers had sent first-half profits up by 41 percent.

    Deutsche Telekom (FWB: DTE; NYSE: DT; LSE: DEU; TYO: 9496) was also higher, gaining 2.72 percent to €12.87.

    Utilities were mixed, with Suez (Euronext: SZE; NYSE: SZE) up 1.61 to €38.58 and RWE (FWB: RWE) adding 1.54 percent to €78.94 but EDF (Euronext: EEN) down 0.56 percent to €74.35.

    The biggest loser in Paris on the day was Total (Euronext: FP; NYSE: TOT), which dropped 2.32 percent to €56.06.

    Consumer goods manufacturer Henkel (FWB: HEN3) fell 3.95 percent to €36.98 for the biggest decline of the session on the Dax.

    Other decliners included IT services group Cap Gemini (Euronext: CAP), which was 2.28 percent lower to €47.25.

    Schneider Electric (Euronext: SCHN) was down 0.75 percent to €97.76 after this week’s announcement that it has acquired the privately-held California-based security systems maker Pelco, the largest CCTV manufacturer in the US, for $1.54 billion cash.

    Insurers, utilties lower in Europe

    The European markets saw significant declines on Tuesday.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 dropped 1.4 percent to 1,587.23.

    The least of the losers in terms of percentage was the IBEX, which was down 0.98 percent to 14,909.7 in Madrid.

    In Paris the CAC-40 was 1.69 percent lower to 5,907.47, while the Dax fell 1.73 percent to 7,806.79 in Frankfurt.

    Car and truck manufacturers were among the few gainers on the session.

    In Paris, Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC: PEUGY) added 0.75 percent to €65.59 for the best performance of the day on the CAC-40.

    Meanwhile truck maker Man (FWB: EDF1) had the best day on the Dax as it added 1.54 percent to €109.02.

    Still, the sector remained mixed with BMW (FWB: BMW) down 2.18 percent to €38.15.

    Insurers had the worst day on both the Dax and the CAC-40.

    In Frankfurt Allianz (FWB: ALV; NYSE: AZ) dropped 2.44 percent to €164.07, while in Paris Axa (Euronext: CS; NYSE: AXA) fell 3.27 percent to €30.50.

    Utilities were also lower, with Eon (FWB: EOA; LSE: EON; NYSE: EON) down 2.12 percent to €120.03 and Suez (Euronext: SZE; NYSE: SZE) closing at €40.33, a decline of 2.58 percent.

    In the semiconductors sector, STMicroelectronics (Euronext: STM; NYSE: STM) was 2.63 percent lower to €13.71, while among oil companies Total (Euronext: FP; NYSE: TOT) fell 2.28 percent to €59.17.

    Deutsche Post (FWB: DPW; LSE: DPO) was down 2.26 percent to €22.07 after a report that United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) has seen strong growth internationally.

    Carmakers see gains in Europe

    Most European markets were higher on Monday.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was 0.58 percent higher to 1,609.07.

    In Madrid, the IBEX added 0.85 percent to 15,056.7, while the CAC-40 gained 0.87 percent to 6,009.16 in Paris and the Dax was 0.88 percent higher to 7,944.21 in Frankfurt.

    Carmakers saw gains, with DaimlerChrysler (FWB: DCX; NYSE: DCX; TYO: 7663) up 2.73 percent to €66.82 ahead of its second quarter report.

    Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC: PEUGY) added 1.78 percent to €65.10 after a broker raised its target share price.

    On the other hand, truck manufacturer Man (FWB: EDF1) dropped 0.31 percent to €107.20.

    In a related sector, tire maker Michelin (Euronext: ML) had the best day on the CAC-40 as it gained 2.75 percent to €104.73.

    Meanwhile, the best performer on the Dax was software group SAP (FWB: SAP; NYSE: SAP), which was 2.85 percent higher to €41.07 on rumors that it could be a target of private equity.

    In energy-related sectors, utility Suez (Euronext: SZE; NYSE: SZE) was up 1.42 percent to €41.40, while power generator Alstom (Euronext: ALO) gained 1.52 percent to €136.59.

    In the oil sector, Total (Euronext: FP; NSYE: TOT) added 1.82 percent to €60.55.

    The worst performances of the day came from Infineon (FWB: IFX; NYSE: IFX), which was 0.62 percent lower in Frankfurt to €12.87, and property company Unibail (Euronext: UL), which dropped 1.75 percent to €184.86 in Paris.

    Other decliners included chemical group Altana (FWB: ALT; NYSE: AAA), which was 0.34 percent lower to €17.61.

    IT services group Cap Gemini (Euronext: CAP) fell 0.55 percent to €55.64, while in the retail sector Carrefour (Euronext: CA) was down 0.19 percent to €53.26.

    European builders see declines

    European markets saw big losses on the session Friday as investors worried about problems in the US housing sector.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 dropped 1.16 percent to 1,599.63. In Frankfurt the Dax was 1.46 percent lower to 7,874.85, while the CAC-40 fell 1.79 percent to 5,957.16 in Paris.

    Madrid’s IBEX dropped 1.82 percent to 14,930.1.

    The Dax and the CAC-40 each had only two gainers on the session.

    The best performer on the Dax was in the pharmaceuticals sector, where Schering (FWB: SCH) added 0.28 percent to €104.83.

    The other gainer there was Volkswagen (FWB: VOW; OTC: VLKAY), which gained 0.21 percent to €121.79.

    In Paris, meanwhile, the automobile manufacturing sector had the biggest winner of the day as Peugeot (Euronext: UG; OTC: PEUGY) was up 1.36 percent to €63.96.

    Carmakers remained mixed, however, as DaimlerChrysler (FWB: DCX; NYSE: DCX; TYO: 7663) fell 2.47 percent to €65.16.

    As on the Dax, the other gainer of the day on the CAC-40 was in the pharmaceuticals sector.

    Sanofi (Euronext: SAN; NSYE: SNY) was 0.32 percent higher to €62.46.

    The worst performance came from steel good manufacturer Vallourec (Euronext: VK), which was 4.89 percent lower to €216.18 on the news that it will sell two firms to Arcelor-Mittal (Euronext: MT; NYSE: MT).

    The construction sector in Paris was lower, with Vinci (Euronext: DG) down 2.48 percent to €55.77 and Lafarge (Euronext: LG) falling 3.64 percent to €126.75.

    Banks also declined.

    Societe Generale (Euronext: GLE) was 2.29 percent lower to €135.54, while Commerzbank (FWB: CBK) was down 2.77 percent to €33.73 on concerns about the US housing market and BNP Paribas (Euronext: BNP; TYO: 8665) dropped 2.99 percent to €84.24.

    In the oil sector, Total (Euronext: FP; NSYE: TOT) fell 2.73 percent to €59.47.

    Banks mixed on session

    European markets were mostly lower Tuesday, with the notable exception of Madrid’s IBEX, which added 0.29 percent to 15,153.8.

    In Paris, the CAC-40 dropped 0.43 percent to 6,099.21, while the Dax was 0.83 percent lower in Frankfurt to close at 8,038.21.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was down 0.49 percent to 1,622.34.

    Vallourec (Euronext: VK) was the best performer on the CAC-40, adding 0.92 percent to €220.75 on rumors that Arcelor Mittal (Euronext: MT; NSYE: MT) might be interested in making a bid.

    Other gainers on the day included foods group Groupe Danone (Euronext: BN; NYSE: DA), which was 0.56 percent higher to €57.08.

    In the pharmaceuticals sector Schering (FWB: SCH) gained 0.34 percent to €104.60.

    Chemicals group BASF (FWB: BAS; LSE: BFA; NYSE: BF) was up 0.23 percent to €99.46.

    Utilities were mixed, with EDF (Euronext: EEN) 0.27 percent higher to €78.95, while Suez (Euronext: SZE; NYSE: SZE) dropped 1.11 percent to €41.16.

    Banks were also mixed on the session.

    In Paris Credit Agricole (Euronext: ACA) added 0.2 percent to €30.11 and Societe Generale (Euronext: GLE) was 0.75 percent higher to €139.79, but in Frankfurt Commerzbank (FWB: CBK) fell 1.41 percent to €34.94.

    Carmakers saw losses on the day.

    Renault (Euronext: RNO) dropped 1.21 percent to €115.74 for the worst performance of the session in Paris, while BMW (FWB: BMW) fell 1.45 to €39.90 in Frankfurt.

    BMW declined even though Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) raised the carmaker’s target share price.

    In addition, truck maker Man (FWB: EDF1) was 1.49 percent lower to €110.10.

    Other losers on the session included oil company Total (Euronext: FP; NYSE: TOT), which was down 1.09 percent to €61.62 on a broker downgrade from “buy” to “hold”.

    Media group Lagardere (Euronext: MMB) fell 1.2 percent to €62.60.

    Banks lead European equities higher

    Equities markets were higher in Europe on Monday, with the FTSE Eurofirst 300 up 0.19 percent to 1,630.35.

    In Paris, the CAC-40 was 0.12 percent higher to 6,125.6, while the Dax gained 0.16 percent to 8,105.69 in Frankfurt and the IBEX was up 0.58 percent to 15,110.4 in Madrid.

    Banks were higher in Europe, helped by continuing events surrounding the sale of ABN Amro (Euronext AAB; NYSE: ABN) as a consortium led by Royal Bank of Scotland (LSE: RBS; NYSE: RBS PRM) raised the cash component of its bid to 93 percent of the total after the Dutch supreme court gave ABN Amro permission to sell its US operation, LaSalle.

    In Frankfurt, Commerzbank (FWB: CBK) added 0.97 percent to €35,45, while in Paris Credit Agricole (Euronext: ACA) was 1.11 percent higher to €30.05, BNP Paribas (Euronext: BNP; TYO: 8665) gained 1.49 percent to €88.67, and Societe Generale (Euronext: GLE) was up 2.1 percent to €138.75.

    BMW (FWB: BMW) was the biggest gainer on the Dax, adding 1.39 percent to €40.64, while in Paris utility EDF (Euronext: EEN) led the CAC-40 with a gain of 2.58 percent to €78.74.

    In Frankfurt, pharmaceuticals group Bayer (FWB: BAY; NSYE: BAY; TYO: 4863) was 1.35 percent higher to €57.17 after JP Morgan (NYSE: JPM; TYO: 8634) said that new data on the company’s blood-clot drug Rivaroxaban would boost shares and raised its target share price from €63 to €70.

    The European steel sector saw declines, with ThyssenKrupp (FWB: TKA; LSE: THK) down 1.12 percent to €44.95 and Mittal Steel (Euronext: MT; NYSE: MT) falling 0.56 percent to €48.33.

    The biggest loser of the day in Paris was Gaz de France (Euronext: GAZ), which dropped 1.43 percent to €36.47.

    The oil sector was lower as well, with Total (Euronext: FP; NSYE: TOT) down 1.19 percent to €62.30.

    Engineering sector higher in Europe

    Equities markets saw significant gains on Thursday after two days of wide declines.

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 added 1.19 percent to 1,620.18. The IBEX gained 1.19 percent to 14,941.8 in Madrid, while the Paris CAC-40 was 1.7 percent higher to 6,103.05 and the Dax was up 1.96 percent to 8,053.43.

    The engineering sector did very well on the day, with the best performance on both the Dax and in Paris.

    In Frankfurt, Siemens (FWB: SIE; NYSE: SI) gained 3.87 percent to €110.82, while in Paris engineering and power generation group Alstom (Euronext: ALO) was 8.45 percent higher to €135.60.

    Builders and those that furnish materials to them were higher in Paris.

    Construction group Vinci (Euronext: EG) added 4 percent to €57.70, while cement and construction materials provider Lafarge (Euronext: LG) gained 2.1 percent to €134.54.

    Other gainers included stock exchange operator Deutsche Boerse (FWB: DB1), which was 3.84 percent higher to ¥89.75 and chipmaker Infineon (FWB: IFX; NYSE: IFX) with a gain of 3.63 percent to €13.41.

    In the oil sector, Total (Euronext: FP; NYSE: TOT) added 3.02 percent to €62.38.

    The biggest loser on the CAC-40 was hotels operator Accor (Euronext: AC), which dropped 1.48 percent to ¥71.88.

    On the Dax, the only decliner of the session was financial services group Marschollek (FWB: MLPG), which fell 0.2 percent to €15.22.

    VW up on 52 percent gain in operating profit

    In Europe on Tuesday the FTSE Eurofirst 300 dropped 0.3 percent to 1,544.99. The real estate and oil sectors were lower, while carmakers saw gains.

    Porsche (Xetra: POR3; FWB: POR3) added 2.7 percent to €1,058.31, while Volkswagen (OTC: VLKAY) gained 8 percent to €94.94 on a full-year report that showed operating profit up 52 percent in 2006.

    Brewers were mixed after Carlsberg (OMX: CARL A, CARL B) said that higher capital expenditures would limit 2007 profit growth. Even though its full-year report fulfilled expectations, the Danish brewer dropped 6.7 percent to DKr583. Heineken (Euronext: HEIA) was also lower, by 2.3 percent to €39.36, ahead of its report that is due Wednesday.

    Elsewhere in the sector, InBev (Euronext: INB; NYSE: ABV) gained 0.5 percent to €53.07 as rumors of a merger with Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD) continue to circulate. Grolsch (Euronext: GROL) added 3.3 percent to €32.94 after it reported that full-year profits exceeded expectations and announced an extra dividend.

    The oil sector declined on lower prices for crude oil. Total (Euronext: FP; NYSE: TOT) dropped 1.5 percent to €52.78, while Statoil (OSE: STL; NYSE: STO) fell 1.6 percent to NKr156.

    In the real estate sector, Unibail (PAR: UL) was 1.3 percent lower to €235.80 on a downgrade from “buy” to “hold” from Deutsche Bank. Also hurting the sector as a whole was news out of the UK that rising interest rates there are hurting the market.

    Steelmakers up after broker comments

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 added 0.8 percent on the session Wednesday to close at 1,547.93. The metals sector saw gains on an upgrade for ThyssenKrupp, while in the oil sector Total was up on a report of record earnings for 2006.

    In the automobile manufacturing sector, DaimlerChrysler added 4.6 percent to €51.50 after it announced a three-year plan to return its US division to profitability.

    Banks were mixed on earnings reports. Societe General dropped 1.6 percent to €137.30 when it said that net income in the fourth quarter barely missed expectations after earnings dropped in its French retail banking division. On the other hand, Commmerzbank added 0.6 percent to €32.05 on a report of record net profits and the announcement that it will raise its dividend by 50 percent. The German bank will also invest in its retail banking division.

    In the oil sector, Total added 1.4 percent to €53.25. It raised its dividend by 15 percent after reporting that earnings were up 5 percent in 2006 to a record net €12.6 billion.

    ThyssenKrupp added 6.6 percent to €38.79 on an upgraded target share price from Deutsche Bank. While raising the steel maker’s target from €41 to €43, the bank also repeated its “buy” recommendation. The upgrade also helped Arcelor-Mittal, up 2.8 percent to €37.31.

    European semiconductors sector mixed

    The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was lower in Monday, closing at 1533.15, a decline of 0.6 percent.

    The Greek banking sector saw declines after a new report showed that use of household credit grew substantially in November, causing some investors to worry that with Eurozone interest rates rising loan defaults could reach worrisome levels. Alpha Bank dropped 1.2 percent to €24.02, while National Bank of Greece fell 1.3 percent to €38.60. EFG Eurobank was 2 percent lower to €29.10 and Bank of Piraeus was down 2.2 percent to €26.40.

    Stock exchanges were lower after it was announced that stockholders in the London Stock Exchange had rejected US exchange operator Nasdaq’s bid for the company. Deutsche Borse dropped 2.2 percent to €157.45. Euronext, still in the process of closing a merger with NYSE Group, fell 4.2 percent to €85.95.

    In the oil sector, a decline of 2 percent in the price of crude oil sent shares lower. Statoil was 0.6 percent lower to NKr162.25, hurt not only by lower prices but by a fourth quarter report that did not rise to expected levels. French oil company Total was down 1.2 percent to €52.10. Neste Oil dropped 2.9 percent to €23.70.

    The semiconductors sector was mixed. STMicroelectronics dropped 1.4 percent to €14.53, but Infineon added 1.3 percent to €12.15 after last week’s announcement of new contracts and on new reports that private equity could be interested in bidding. Meanwhile, chip-making equipment manufacturer ASML dropped 2.7 percent to €19.16.
